This module is designed to help investigators select or create an appropriate model to answer eye and vision research questions. You will be presented with a thorough review of in vitro, in vivo and ex vivo animal models, along with a discussion of the ethical and regulatory issues associated with these types of research. The module includes a primer on ocular pharmacology research and an overview of the documentation, analysis and presentation of ocular research data.

This module is presented as a series of 20 mini-modules that can be viewed in any order. All mini-modules must be completed in order to earn a certificate of completion.

Although this module is packed with useful information and practical advice, it will not answer every question you may have about eye and vision research techniques. Research is constantly evolving as new learning takes place. You are encouraged to use the references and resources provided throughout the module and accessible via the Resources tab to learn more about each topic.

After having identified an important, original and feasible research question, this educational material will allow participants to:

State the difference between in silico, in vitro and in vivo models
Recognize the advantages and limitations of specific experimental models
Plan experiments to minimize animal use and still produce robust and significant results
Identify the most suitable equipment and measures that will aid in answering the research question
