How AI can help bring ophthalmic care to underserved communities
Presenters
Description
Summary:
Eye care services are often not accessible, affordable, or available. The World Report of Vision highlighted the enormous number of 1 billion individuals that are visually impaired but have not been seen or diagnosed. In addition, it is often difficult for patients with known eye diseases to seek needed eye care. Some of the reasons for these obstacles including socioeconomic status, geographic locations, cost of eye care, and long waiting time with vulnerable populations being more affected. Recently, there has been great advancement in artificial intelligence (AI) in the delivery of eye care. AI utilization could potentially offer opportunities that would target some of the obstacles to underserved communities accessing the needed care.
